User added info

Cavachon dogs are a type of mixed breed or hybrid dogs that are produced from a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. These hybrid dogs have experience a surge in popularity in recent years as a designer dogs. Most hybrid dogs are produced for the specific purpose of bringing out certain characteristics of both parents. While many Cavachons that are seen today are produced as first generation dogs; which means that both parents are purebreds, it is also possible to have a second generation Cavachon, which means that both parents were Cavachons rather than purebreds. Prospective owners should keep in mind that a Cavachon cannot be considered as a purebred, even if both parents were purebreds. The general goal of breeding Cavachons is to produce a puppy that does not shed, is hypo-allergenic and has specific coloring and a specific size. (most are light shedders) The exact size of a Cavachon will depend upon the size of the dog that was used to produce the puppy. This is particularly true when it comes to height as the height of a Cavachon will largely depend upon the height of the parents and whether the dog was produced as a first generation or a second generation dog. Cavachons can be tall as well as short.

Cavachons are available in a variety of coat colors. Peach and white are among the most common colors, but other color varieties may include solid peach as well as black and tan, sable and white and tri-colored.

Character

The intelligence of Cavachon puppies makes them quite easy to train and they do tend to respond well to training when it is provided early on. The Cavachon is well known for barking when strangers come near, but should not be depended upon in order to act as a reliable watchdog.

The friendly and loving nature of Cavachons has led to a great demand in the last few years. Cavachon dogs are known to be quite intelligent and gentle as well as having a nature that is very friendly. Their small size and playfulness makes them an ideal dog for families, especially those with children. The dog gets along well with children and is perfectly capable of putting up with quite a bit of attention and play from children. The Cavachon also seems to get along well with other dogs and pets as well.

Cavachons are loving and due to the fact that they can be gentle they can be fun to play with but they can get a little wild sometimes

General Health

For the most part, Cavachon dogs are known for having good health and do not suffer from a lot of serious health problems. While a number of purebreds do tend to experience problems with structural and congenital problems, including hip dyslplasia, that is typically not the case with Cavachons. Prospective owners who are concerned about such possible problems should make sure they investigate the parentage thoroughly to be fully aware of any possible health problems. When provided with a good diet, regular checkups and exercise, the Cavachon should do quite well with few health problems at all.

However, it is important to note that Cavachons can inherit health problems that are prevalent in both the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise. For example, the leading cause of death in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is Mitral Valve Disease, which can lead to congestive heart failure. If the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent had heart problems, then it is likely its Cavachon offspring can inherit such heart problems as well. Bichon Frise, even though considered to be a healthy breed, can suffer from diseases to the immune system, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia, immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, and liver shunts (which can drastically decrease their overall lifespan from 15-20 years to 4-6 years). Even though hybrid dogs, including the Cavachon, are generally healthier than purebred dogs, it is important to make sure that both of the parents are free from genetic health issues before getting a Cavachon puppy.

History

Like many hybrid dogs, the Cavachon was originally produced to bring out the best qualities of two different breeds of dogs. In this case, it is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise. The breed is known for being playful, but is not overtly hyper like many dogs. It is also hypo-allergenic. While this hybrid breed may be able to be registered with specific hybrid registries, it cannot be registered with purebred registries even if both parents were purebreds.

Maintenance

Prospective owners who are considering bringing home a Cavachon should understand that this dog is fairly high maintenance in terms of grooming. This dog will need to be groomed quite frequently. At a minimum, owners should expect to have this dog groomed about once every six weeks. A Cavachon will need to be bathed out once per week and will also need to have a complete brush out at least once per week as well. This dog does not shed, which can be quite beneficial to individuals who suffer from allergies and require a hypo-allergenic dog.

Ideal Environment

The ideal environment for a Cavachon will be one in which it can receive plenty of affection as well as exercise. The Cavachon will not necessarily need to live outside. Most Cavachons make excellent inside dogs and can do quite well living in a condo or an apartment, provided that they are given exercise on a regular basis in order to maintain their health and help them expel their energy. This is not a dog that should be left out to run loose on the outside unsupervised without some type of fencing in order to make sure that it does not run off. For the most part, Cavachons can adapt well to an environment but care should be taken to protect them from the cold.

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.

Do cavachons shed?

Cavachons are low to non shedding. Most have a Bichon Frise coat which, in a purebred, does not shed, but since one of their parents is a Cavalier, they can have a somewhat shedding coat. F1s typically have the non shedding coat. (Bichon Frise with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) F2s are said to lose their non shedding coat (Cavachon with Cavachon)

Do the cavachons have runny eyes or are they prone to ear infections?

Can't speak for the breed as a whole, of course, but my dog's eyes do tear and since I always hated that look, I'm using Angel Eyes which does help (but doesn't eliminate problem completely)(expensive, but less so through Ryan's Pet Supply online, and once you're past the first few months of daily administration (and start giving it less frequently), it's not so bad. My dog has also had bouts with ear infections twice: once after grooming, and then after swimming in pool. Vet said to put ear solution(forget the name) in ear canals before swimming and to avoid water in ear during bath. He's been a very expensive dog (including treatment for Tylenol ingestion after cat knocked bottle off bathroom counter: (hmmm....attempted murder?) he grabbed bottle and ran, with me right behind, and may have eaten a pill when the child(not dog)-proof top came off. And other medical scares, but I'm a doting 'mom' and rush him to vet! He's worth it all though!

Can you breed a cavachon and a cavachon? They are from different families and my daughter and her husband want one or two and my parents also want two. I was hoping to just breed my two cavachons and give all the babies away to my familiy.

Second generation cavachons have been known to lose their no shred properties. The only way to keep the cavachon as no shex and hypoallergenic is to breed a spaniel and a bichon.

We have a 6mth old puppy,he started going lame in his back left leg to the point he has been unable to put weight on it. He has been on a course of medication which has helped him to the point that he bares slight weight upon it. He is due to have X-rays taken and we are very concerned . Does anyone know of a Cavachon with similar symptons ??? Before Henry became lame, he would run using both hind legs together, rabbit fashion ( hopping ) he also does this when going up and down stairs. Is this how your Cavachon runs ? he also does not like jumping up on chairs /sofas etc ANY HELP / COMMENTS WOULD BE WELCOLMED

I don't have an answer, but my 10-month-old Cavachon also has trouble with his right hind leg (hip seemingly going out of joint and then back in. He limps for about 30 seconds or so, and then seems to be okay. But it seems to be happening more often rather than getting better. I'm worried too. I'd like to know what to expect. Hopefully he will grow out of the problem.
